Six fishermen in boat with broken engine rescued in Figueira da Foz

Six fishermen who were on a boat whose engine broke down about 7.4 kilometers from the port of Figueira da Foz, in the district of Coimbra, were helped on Wednesday, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) said today.

In a statement, the authority said that the fishing boat ran out of propulsion due to an engine failure, about four nautical miles (approximately 7.4 kilometers) southwest of the port of Figueira da Foz.

The alert was received at 16:40 from the master of the vessel, and “immediately activated crew members from the Figueira da Foz Life Saving Station”, as described in a statement from the AMN.

The six crew members were physically well and did not require medical assistance.

For reasons of safety for people and navigation, the lifeboat was towed to the port of Figueira da Foz by the lifeboat station crew.

The AMN adds that the owner of the vessel has been notified and will only be able to sail again after it has been inspected to check that the necessary safety conditions are in place.
