Smoke from fires in the North and Center invades the cities of Porto and Gaia

The cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia were covered in smoke on Wednesday afternoon due to the wildfires that have been raging for several days in the North and Central regions of the country.

In the images captured near Jardim do Morro, which can be seen in the gallery above, it is possible to observe the area covered in smoke and several people resorting to wearing masks to avoid inhaling the smoke.

It should be noted that the North and Central regions of the country, especially the districts of Aveiro, Porto, Vila Real, Braga, Viseu, and Coimbra, are the most affected by the fires that started, for the most part, on Sunday.

Five people have died and about 120 have been injured in the fires. Previously, authorities reported seven fatalities, but on Wednesday, Civil Protection explained that two civilians who died of sudden illness are not included in the count.

The area burned in mainland Portugal since Sunday exceeds 106,000 hectares, according to the European Copernicus system, which shows that in the North and Central regions, nearly 76,000 hectares have already burned.
