Summer arrives with ‘discounts’ on fuel: find out how much you will pay less to fill up your tank

Different fuel pistols.

In the week that officially marks the arrival of summer (and the heat…), nothing better than good news for those who intend to go on vacation or go to the Portuguese beaches: fuel prices, as of today, will decrease, with greater emphasis on gasoline 95. “The evolution of prices in euros points to a devaluation of gasoline prices by 2 cents per liter while diesel should register a very slight decrease of up to 0.5 cents per liter,” said a source from the sector to ‘Executive Digest’.

Prices at stations next to hypermarkets, which have gained many fans with the fuel hike, also follow market trends. “The trend next week will be for a decrease of €0.0162 on gasoline and €0.0042 on diesel.”

Data from the Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) show that the average price of a liter of gasoline in Portugal currently costs 1.703 euros while diesel is worth 1.482 euros. However, prices may vary at filling stations, since the price fixed in the network also takes into account the level of competition, supply and demand in each market and the level of fixed costs of each station.

Since the beginning of the year, the price of diesel has gone down 14 times and up only nine times. In the case of gasoline, it has gone up 12 times and down 11 times, the DGEG indicated. In this period, the price of diesel depreciated 15.2 cents per liter while the price of gasoline was 3.3 cents higher.

In other words, filling up a 60-liter tank of diesel costs 9.12 euros less than 23 weeks ago. But to fill up a tank of gasoline the numbers are more ‘aggressive’ for the national pockets: it takes 1.98 euros more.

The most recent bulletin on fuels from the European Commission indicates that Portugal has the 10th most expensive gasoline of the 28 countries of the European Union, 2.7 cents below the European average and 10.8 cents more expensive than Spain. Diesel is in 13th place in the European ranking.
