The presidential dispatch of the Regional Government, published today in the Official Journal, grants a day off on the so-called “Lajes Tuesday,” considering that the religious and cultural manifestations held on this date “benefit from strong support and participation by residents of Terceira Island.”
The executive (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) emphasizes that the exception applies to “workers of services and organizations that, for reasons of public interest, must remain operational during that period, in terms to be defined by the competent member of the Regional Government.”
The leaders of these services “should promote an equivalent exemption from the duty of attendance for their respective workers, on a day to be set in due course,” as stated in the dispatch signed by the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolieiro.
The document highlights “the historical and cultural foundations associated with this date” to justify “giving relevance to this day, conferring social and economic importance through the granting of a day off, as was already the case last year.”
During the first week of October, festivities in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary are held in the parish of Vila das Lajes, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória.
The main attraction is the “bodo de leite” (milk offering) that takes place on Tuesday, known as “Lajes Tuesday.”
