Based on the forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this regional authority indicated that the wind will remain north/northeast “fresh to very fresh, sometimes strong until late morning.”
Visibility at sea will continue to be “good to moderate” and the waves will be around three meters in height, decreasing to two meters or, in the case of the southern part, 1.5 meters.
Given the continuation of this meteorological situation, the captaincy renews its recommendations to the entire maritime community and the population, including reinforcing mooring and close surveillance of docked and anchored vessels.
It also advises against walks near the sea or in areas exposed to sea agitation and the practice of recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and steep areas, frequently hit by breaking waves.
Madeira Island is the only area in the country currently under an orange warning from IPMA for hot weather, until 6:00 PM on Monday. Porto Santo Island is under a yellow warning.
The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued by IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation, while the orange warning (the second level) is issued when there is a moderate to high-risk meteorological situation.
For today, the forecast is for periods of very cloudy skies, with partly cloudy conditions on the southwest side of Madeira Island.
The wind has been affecting landings and takeoffs at Madeira International Airport since late Saturday afternoon, causing dozens of connections to be canceled.
