The Government of the Azores authorizes subdivision of neighborhoods on the island of Santa Maria

In dispatches signed by the Regional Secretary for Youth, Housing and Employment, Maria João Carreiro, it is stated that the operation involves the neighborhoods of São Lourenço, Santa Bárbara, and Santo Espírito.

Quoted in a press release, Maria João Carreiro states that “the completion of this stage will allow the beginning of the requalification phase for the entire housing complex” of Santa Maria Airport.

For this housing complex, plans include “the requalification of existing infrastructures and the creation of necessary urban infrastructures for water supply, basic sanitation, electricity supply, and communications.”

The dispatches also allow for the requalification of existing homes and new constructions registered with the Civil Registry Office and Tax Service, as well as the sale of homes and/or newly established lots.

The subdivision permit for the Santo Espírito neighborhood, covering 7,632.40 square meters, consists of 14 residential lots with areas for streets, sidewalks, parking spaces, and green spaces to be integrated into the municipal public domain.

The Santa Bárbara neighborhood, with a total area of 63,776.54 square meters, comprises 60 new lots, of which 58 are residential and two are intended for services and/or commerce.

Covering 53,793.23 square meters, the São Lourenço subdivision permit allows for the creation of 42 new lots, with 38 residential lots and four intended for commerce and/or services.

On Tuesday, Chega/Açores, during a visit to Santa Maria Island, contacted some residents in the housing complex who complained about the lack of cleaning of various plots and vacant houses, where residents coexist with rat infestations.

“The residents, who pay rent to the Regional Government, the owner of the houses, complain that the landlord does not renovate the homes but also does not sell them. Many of these residents even want to purchase the homes where they have lived for decades but have been without answers for many months, both for sale and for the rehabilitation of the houses,” Chega/Açores stated in a press release.

The Chega deputies recalled that the Regional Government “even announced, two years ago, the creation of a working group to study the various situations of the Santa Maria housing complex.”

“However, there are still no results from this work to find an effective solution for abandoned houses and to find answers for the residents of those neighborhoods,” they added.
