The application period for the program runs from Friday to September 15, with eligible “ongoing projects that have previously obtained scientific evaluation in accordance with the Archaeological Works Regulation,” according to this organization of the Ministry of Culture.
“The last rounds of applications for archaeological research funding took place in 2005 and 2021,” recalled the entity led by João Soalheiro, adding that the objective is “to ensure the stability and predictability necessary for planning, programming, and implementing archaeological research projects in Portugal, with the regular opening of financial support programs.”
According to the public institute, there are currently about 60 active research projects in Portuguese territory, which, through this program, can be supported with a maximum grant of 15,000 euros.
As per the regulations, eligible expenses for this support include “acquisition of specialized services,” current expenses (including consumables), and mission work (including accommodation, food, and travel).
“The scope of these projects is very diverse, spread across all planning regions of mainland Portugal, with chronologies from the Paleolithic to the Contemporary Age, also including underwater archaeology research,” the institute recalled, noting that according to the regulations, each responsible researcher can apply for only one project.
Applications and supporting documents must be submitted by email to pi******@pa****************.pt, and the deliberation will take place within five working days, followed by the publication of results on their website on September 30.
