“You already know what I think about this matter. I believe there will be a budget, it will be approved, there will be an understanding from those who should approve it, and therefore I remain realistically optimistic,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa responded to journalists at the end of the solemn session of the VI Congress of the Portuguese Psychologists Association and the XIII Ibero-American Congress of Psychology, taking place in Lisbon.

When asked about what he would do if that doesn’t happen, the Head of State insisted that “the only good solution” is for the document to be approved, and therefore he is working towards that solution.

“In this case, there are greater reasons than in other circumstances for having a budget. In other circumstances, for me, it was fundamental to have a budget, but there were weighty reasons of various kinds that went against it. Here, there aren’t,” he compared.

According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “the world is more complicated than it was” when other budgets were rejected, giving as examples the fact that there was no war in Ukraine or the Middle East then, and “the international economic situation is worse than it was.”

“There are currently global and European conditions that mean the budget is more important than it was at other times in Portuguese life,” he warned.
