Thousands of people filled this Sunday the marginal avenues of Funchal, Madeira, where they watched the passage of the Flower Festival float parade, one of the highlights of this cultural and touristic showcase, which counted with the participation of 1,700 figurants.
“The success of this parade is also the fact that almost every family has children participating,” said the president of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, who was among the thousands of Madeirans and tourists, scattered along Avenida do Mar and Avenida Sá Carneiro, on an afternoon of much sun, much color, and many flowers.
The Madeira Executive has invested 940 thousand euros in the Flower Festival 2023, the highest amount ever, and the activities started on Friday and will last until May 22nd, a period when hotel occupancy in the region is around 94%.
Among various events, the program of the Flower Festival – one of Madeira’s greatest tourist and cultural attractions – includes the floral carpets, the flower and regional products market, the 68th flower exhibition, the Madeira Embroidery and regional handicrafts exhibition, several workshops, the construction of a ‘solidarity wall’ by users of institutions, and a parade of classic cars.
The Flower Festival’s program also includes the event ‘Monte Imperador’, which portrays the time of Charles of Austria’s passage through Madeira, a fashion show, the school dance festival, a show that remembers the Madeiran artist Max, and another that bets on the fusion of dance and circus arts.
“From the hotel occupancy point of view it is very good, the hotels are completely full, the weather is magnificent, and all the activities that are going to take place throughout this month have had a great affluence of public,” said the president of the Regional Government.
