ULS São José performed 1.39 million consultations and 27 thousand surgeries

Out of the total consultations carried out between January 1 and June 30, 2024, 646,107 were hospital consultations (444,100 medical and 202,007 non-medical) and 741,527 were external consultations in Primary Health Care (506,040 medical and 235,487 non-medical), according to a report released today by the Local Health Unit (ULS) São José, one of the largest in the country.

“Compared to the same period last year, there is a 5.3% growth in hospital consultations and a 2.5% increase in Primary Health Care (CSP) consultations,” the institution states.

26,839 surgeries were also performed (22,565 scheduled and 4,274 urgent), representing a 0.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

According to the healthcare activity data, 26,422 patients were treated as inpatients in the first semester (+1.5% compared to 2023), and 128,005 emergency episodes were recorded (+4.6%).

By June, 1,979 births were performed, corresponding to a 20.5% increase compared to June 2023.

In primary health care, there was also growth in the number of home visits: 22,708 in the first half of 2024 (+5.3% compared to 2023).

For the President of the Board of Directors of ULS São José, Rosa Valente de Matos, these results are due to the “great commitment of the institution’s health professionals,” as well as the investment in new organizational models, namely Integrated Responsibility Centers (CRI) and Clinics, which translates into greater coordination and teamwork, with results in terms of production.”

Rosa Valente de Matos also highlights “that the focus on organizational innovation and technology has played an essential role” in continuing “to always improve” the ULS results and service to patients.

The Lisbon Central University Hospital Center (CHULC) has been, since January 1, the São José Local Health Unit.

The new organization results from the merger, by aggregation, of CHULC, the Lisbon Psychiatric Hospital Center, the Dr. Gama Pinto Ophthalmology Institute, the Lisbon Central Health Centers Group, and the Sacavém Health Center.

The direct area of influence of ULS São José now covers 13 parishes in the municipality of Lisbon and four in the municipality of Loures, corresponding to a total of 384,774 residents and 440,012 registered in primary health care units.

The provision of hospital health care corresponds to a capacity of more than 1,500 beds. At the primary health care level, ULS São José integrates 28 Personalized Health Care and Family Health Units, as well as five other functional units.

The number of health professionals at ULS São José exceeds 10,000.
