The historic center of Viseu will be car-free on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, holiday eves and public holidays until September 21, the city council announced today.
In this way, the municipality “renews the invitation to Viseenses, visitors and tourists to enjoy the historic center in all its fullness and safety, without cars”.
Under the motto “Historic center, summer without cars”, the traffic closure in the historic center will take place on Fridays and the eve of public holidays between 19:00 and 02:00, on Saturdays between 16:00 and 02:00 and on Sundays and public holidays between 15:00 and 00:00.
According to the Viseu City Council, this ban covers the main accesses to the old town, namely at the beginning of Rua dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra and at the junction of Travessa da Misericórdia and the Sé churchyard, with traffic remaining on Calçada da Vigia.
The municipality explained that on days when there are shows or concerts in the churchyard, the cut will be made at the beginning of Travessa da Misericórdia.
Exceptionally, residents of the historic area, people with reduced or conditioned mobility and hotel guests will be allowed access through the Porta do Soar, in the opposite direction, exiting via Rua Chão do Mestre, Rua Augusta Cruz, Praça D. Duarte and, consequently, Rua Augusto Hilário or Rua D. Duarte.
The Viseu City Council also said that during times of worship and religious ceremonies, taking place in the Viseu Cathedral or the Misericórdia Church, access to the Cathedral Churchyard will exceptionally be via Travessa da Misericórdia.
