Public transport in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area will provide 354,000 more seats on each working day and 780,000 more seats on weekend days during World Youth Day (WYD) in August, it was announced today.
According to the presentation available on the Government Portal, between August 1 and 4, an additional 354,000 seats will be made available per day, of which 119,000 on road, 90,000 on trains, 143,000 on metro and surface metro and 2,000 on boats.
On the 5th and 6th, an additional 780,000 seats are planned to be available daily, of which 429,000 by road, 170,000 by train, 154,000 by metro/surface rail and 27,000 by boat.
The reinforcement of the offer was agreed with CP – Comboios de Portugal, Metropolitano de Lisboa, Carris, Carris Metropolitana, Fertagus, Metro Transportes do Sul and Transtejo/Soflusa.
The presentation of the security and mobility plans for WYD is taking place this afternoon in Lisbon, with the presence of the Deputy Minister and Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Catarina Mendes, the coordinator of the WYD Project Group, José Sá Fernandes, and the Secretary General of the Internal Security System, Paulo Vizeu Pinheiro.
More than one million people are expected in Lisbon for World Youth Day (WYD) with Pope Francis from August 1 to 6.
The Pope, the first to sign up for WYD, arrives in Lisbon on August 2 and is scheduled to visit the Shrine of Fatima on August 5 to pray for peace and an end to the war in Ukraine.
Considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church, the day was born at the initiative of Pope John Paul II, after the success of a meeting with young people in 1985 in Rome, in the International Year of Youth.
The main ceremonies of the day will take place in Parque Tejo, north of Parque das Nações, on the riverside of the Tagus, on land owned by the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures, and in Parque Eduardo VII, in the center of the capital.
