The year 2023 registers, until July 28, 27% less rural fires and 70% less burned area, compared to the average of the last decade, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC) announced today.

In astatement, the MAAC states that, comparing 2023 figures with the history of the previous 10 years “there were 27% fewer rural fires and 70% less burned area compared to the average for the period”

“The year 2023 registers, until July 28, the 3rd lowest value in number of fires and the 4th lowest value of burned area, since 2013”, can be read in the note.

According to the ministry, since the approval of the Integrated Rural Fire Management System, there has been a “decrease in fires in the summer months that originated in the use of fire”, in addition to a “significant reduction in fires over 500/1,000 hectares”.

According to the data released by the ministry, in 2017 the investment “in prevention reached about 20% and 80% in combat”, and currently “each of these axes has about 50%”.

“The total investment in the two axes has more than doubled compared to 2017 (when 143 million euros were invested), with 2023 being the year with the greatest effort ever (around 500 million euros)”, explains MAAC.

The Government intends, later this year, to approve a legislative package for Rustic Property, supported by the reports and proposals presented by the Working Group for Rustic Property.

The objective, according to the note, “is to respond to the problems of rural space management posed by the current co-ownership, inheritance regimes, namely those posed by the vacant and undivided inheritance and to avoid division below the minimum unit of culture”.
